The amount of carbohydrate consumption has decreased in the past few years. However carbohydrates are a very important source of energy to the body and need to comprise of 55% of the total energy intake. As the brain and the red blood cells need a constant supply of glucose, it is important that we consume enough carbohydrates throughout the day. It is recommended that people consume about 180g of carbohydrates a day.

A healthy diet should include mainly complex carbohydrates like fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals. Some of the benefits of consumption of wholegrains are protection from type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. On the contrary, if a diet is high in energy dense foods high in free sugars then there is a risk of excessive fat accumulation. Attention should be made to fruit juices and other beverages, which are advertised as “healthy”, however contain a lot of added sugar or sweeteners. These hidden calories can easily contribute to the risk of obesity, especially in childhood.

If you are a highly active person, who trains on a daily basis, then the amount of carbohydrates consumed should be even higher in order to replenish the glycogen stores in the body. It is important to have a sufficient amount of carbohydrate in meals before an event in order to enhance physical performance. People who exercise 3 times a week or less should not worry about replenishing their carbohydrate stores and just follow a healthy diet.

Diets which are low in carbohydrates such as the Atkins diet, might aid weight loss in the short term, however if continued over a year or more can cause a variety of side effects and might not have any influence on weight loss.
